- Popping / crackling — Water trapped under sediment boils and bursts through. Classic hard-water symptom.
- Rumbling — Heavy sediment layer at the bottom of the tank.
- Banging / hammering — Can be water hammer in the pipes or sediment-related; also check for loose pipes.
- High-pitched whine — Sometimes a failing element or restriction in tankless units.
